Known Personality

Prior to the Scourge invasion, Vivane was very sheltered by her father, who wished to protect her -- and keep her from any risk that would reduce her value as a bartering chip. She rarely left the family's Silvermoon manor, and seemed content with that, choosing to lose herself in the endless rows of books. She had vague ideas of becoming a historian of some sort, and had already written several minor essays piecing together diverse bits of High Elf history in new and unusual ways. She was shy around strangers, very modest, and seemingly almost completely innocent and naive.

On the surface, even now, she appears much the same, but there's something much more disquieting about her. She is quiet, even tranquil, but has developed a strange fascination with pain. Whether gently tearing the legs off a beetle, or dissecting a live forest troll whelp, she never shows any malice or anger, but she will watch its struggles and listen to the noises it makes as it dies in rapt fascination. She seems to have no conception that this is something unusual, and discusses it as shyly but innocuously as she might discuss a particularly fascinating old book she has read.

Some speculate it was simply the death of her family, and being trapped underneath a burning house for days while the undead rampaged through the city, that made her this way. Others blame the tome of demonic lore she found in that same room, and which has served since to address her craving for mana. But whatever the case, the influential members of house Suncrown are becoming aware that there is something distinctly dangerous about her. Dangerous, but also potentially useful -- it's just a matter of finding the right use for her without letting her madness build to the point where she becomes a threat to the clan. And if it can't be done... well, they'll worry about that when the time comes, but they'll be sure to be prepared.

Character History

Before the siege and the destruction of the Sunwell, the house of Ghostmoon was a clan of mages, scholars, and historians, with private holdings in several parts of Quel'Thalas, and an extensive collection of rare books and artifacts that they had used as leverage to attain some small political power. Ralin Ghostmoon, patriarch of the clan, was always searching for ways to extend his influence, and when the opportunity came up, he aggressively sought an alliance with the house of Suncrown. By pursuing the favor of Lord Lucien, he finally was able to come to an understanding. Ralin's eldest daughter, Vivane, would be married to a minor scion of the Suncrown clan, providing the Ghostmoons with social status and influential connections, and the Suncrowns would gain access to the most private of the Ghostmoon libraries, which contained information and magic that Lucien felt would be very useful to his future plans.

Then, of course, came Arthas's siege. The Ghostmoons prepared to defend their libraries -- the one treasure the clan had. But Arthas's necromancers, perhaps influenced by Kel'Thuzad, had given orders that large collections of books were a high-priority target, the better to obtain useful intelligence for the Scourge and deny the same to the elves.

In a single night, all the Ghostmoon libraries burned.

Ralin himself died defending the family's manor in Silvermoon, torn apart by a pack of ghouls. In fact, after the Scourge had retreated, it soon became apparent that every member of the family had been killed in the invasion save one. Ralin had managed to escort his eldest daughter to a secure underground chamber, used to store some of the most valuable books, and the Scourge did not manage to find it before they set fire to the manor and withdrew. Vivane emerged several days later, intact, but traumatized. Rescuers came across her cradling the burned body of her father in her lap.

The engagement had never been formalized before the deaths of Ralin and Lucien, and in any case Vivane had very little to offer the Suncrown family now that hers had been destroyed. But her fiance's family took pity on her, and took her in regardless, sheltering her and, effectively, taking her as a retainer until she was able to stand on her own again. The question of whether the engagement would go through or not would be held in abeyance until matters settled down, although it seemed quite unlikely.
